The ICT Roller Girls are now eligible to skate at the regional and national levels after being inducted into the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, and are presently the first and only WFTDA certified league in the state of Kansas.
As roller derby continues to grow in popularity, with over 500 leagues in 16 different countries, becoming a member of the nationally recognized league means that the ICT Roller Girls are at the top of their game. And their league continues to grow.
“This is an exciting time for the ICT Roller Girls! In my nearly four years with the league I’ve witnessed its growth in becoming the prominent women’s flat track derby league in Kansas. Our membership in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association will provide us with the opportunity to represent our great city of Wichita on an international stage!” skater and league Co-Director Cori “Janesaw Massacre” Garlow said.
To celebrate their induction, the ICT Roller Girls are hosting their Midwest rivals, the Springfield Roller Girls, for their third home bout of the season on June 26, 2010. Roller Derby RUMBLE, to be held at Skate South at 1900 E. MacArthur Rd., starts at 7:00 p.m., and the doors open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available in advance from www.ictrollergirls.com for $10.00 or at the door for $12.00. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.
Not only is Skate South an historic venue, but so also is the roller derby movement. According to USA Today roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the nation. And ICT Roller Girls is Wichita’s original, all female flat-track roller derby team, and now the first and only WFTDA certified league in the state of Kansas.
“Roller derby represents a camaraderie and athleticism that we need as women to strengthen our minds, bodies and attitudes. The ICT Roller Girls represent women from across the board; we have students, mothers, hair-stylists, teachers, veterinarians, dieticians and physicians among our ranks. Joining the ICT Roller Girls will give you an excellent opportunity to network socially, as well as open your life to the exciting, fast-paced, and newly emerging underground sport of flat track roller derby,” skater and league Co-Director Jessica “Carmen Ejectya” Ostrye said.
