In recognition of The Wichita Center for the Arts’ 90th Anniversary, beginning Friday, June 25, selections from the Center’s permanent collection will be on display in an exhibit titled Works from the Permanent Collection 1920 – 2010. This diverse exhibit features an in-depth collection of over 100 paintings, ceramics, enamel, jewelry, fiber, and sculpture collected by the Center over the past 90 years.
Formerly known as The Wichita Art Association, the Center’s philosophy has provided opportunities to collect art to live with and to study, create, and experience art. Eleven years ago, an exhibit titled What Wichita Collects showcased art from local collectors and allowed gallery visitors the chance to view many outstanding artworks typically only on display in private homes.
On June 25, the Wichita Center for the Arts will again showcase a diverse array of private collections in an exhibit titled What Wichita Collects II. This exhibit will include over 100 pieces of paintings, sculpture, and fine art objects borrowed from some of the city’s most well known art collectors and will feature notable artists as Chihuly, Albert Bierstadt, Miro, Mary Kretsinger, John Steuart Curry, Lester Ramer, Birger Sandzen, and Thomas Hart Benton.
The public is invited to attend a free opening reception for both exhibits at The Wichita Center for the Arts — located at 9112 E. Central — from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010. Complimentary light hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.
Both exhibits open Friday, June 25 and run through Sunday, July 18, 2010. The Wichita Center for the Arts Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission is always free. For more information, call (316) 634-2787.
